I was introduced to poke at my best friend’s Hawaiian restaurant. It was one of my favorite things to get after a day of surfing or working at the YMCA as a lifeguard or swim instructor. I fell in love with the flavors, the freshness of the fish, and the taste of the seaweed in the marinade. When I later traveled to Hawaii I got to taste a bunch of different poke at one of the best poke shops in Honolulu. This is one of my favorite raw fish style dishes and now I want to share it with you. So today I’m sharing with you my Fatty Drunken Poke!

Author: Yogi Parker| Prep time: 20 mins | Marinating time: 1 hour+ | Total time: 1 hour 20 mins | Serves: 4
What You Need
- 6 TBSP coconut aminos
- 1 TBSP fresh grated ginger
- 2 TBSP sesame oil
- 3 TBSP dry sherry
- 2 TBSP rice wine vinegar
- 1 lb. / 450g fresh sushi grade raw fish, cut in equal sized cubes about 1/2 inch in size
- 1.5 oz. / 40g dried seaweed salad mix
- 1.5 oz. / 40g onion, thinly sliced
- 4 oz. / 110g cucumber, chopped
- 3.5 oz. / 100g bell pepper, seeded and chopped
- 1.5 oz. / 40g green onion, sliced
- 1.5 oz. / 40g celery, sliced
- 8 oz. / 225g avocado flesh, cut into small cubes
- 2.5 oz. / 70g sesame seeds
- 1 TBSP large flake sea salt (like Hawaiian black)
What You Do
- Combine first 5 ingredients together for the sauce and combine well using a whisk.
- Put the fish in a bowl and add two thirds of the sauce. Toss to make sure all the fish is covered well. Cover and put the fish in the fridge to marinate for at least 1 hour. I generally allow it to marinate for at least three.
- Put the seaweed in a bowl and add enough lukewarm water to cover. Allow the seaweed to sit in the water for about three or four minutes until seaweed becomes tender.
- Drain the seaweed well and chop into bite sized pieces if necessary.
- Mix all the veggies together with the fish and the remainder of the sauce and mix to combine well.
- Add sesame seeds and salt and give a quick toss to incorporate but not melt the salt.
- Serve with an additional sprinkling of sesame seeds and salt if you want.
Top Recipe Tips
- Ahi, yellowtail, and other types of tuna are great in this dish, as is fresh salmon. Octopus is also great.
- If you want to spice things up a bit, add some red pepper flake or some sambal oelek (chili pepper paste).
